Scientific-research activities

The main directions of scientific and research work:

            The scientific and research activity of the Department of Reinforced Concrete and Prestressed  Concrete Structures L-1 is mainly related to the experimental research of structural members (often in a natural scale) and building materials. The research is aimed at verifying the computational models and material properties, which is an essential element of technical and technological progress.

            The scientific and research work is carried out as: our own research, statutory activity, and as grants and research work for the industry. It covers a wide range of issues, including:

• basics of engineering methods for designing reinforced concrete, prestressed concrete and masonry structures;
• experimental and numerical analysis of reinforced concrete columns made of high-strength concrete and reinforced concrete beams with high-strength steel reinforcement;
• use of FRP materials in concrete structures;
• experimental and numerical analysis of reinforced concrete and prestressed concrete structures under fire conditions,
• multi-field issues in the analysis of concrete structures, modelling of environmental interactions (alkali-aggregate reaction in concrete);
• numerical modelling of load-bearing capacity and deformability of concrete structures, analysis of the scale effect;
• verification of the performance of reinforcing bars in terms of adhesion of steel to concrete by means of a pull-out test;
• non-destructive and semi-destructive methods of identifying the mechanical properties of masonry elements in existing buildings;
• models and analyses of historic masonry structures and methods of their strengthening;
• analysis of changes in the temperature of hardening concrete in semi-massive and massive reinforced concrete structures;
• analysis of the crack risk and maturing concrete cracking;
• analysis of imposed strains, residual and imposed stresses in semi-massive and massive reinforced concrete structures;
• theoretical models of corrosion progress in structural members, together with their verification;
• models of work of the anchorage zone of prestressing tendons and their calibration;
• alternative methods of prestressing concrete elements;
• modern techniques for measuring various physical quantities in laboratory conditions and in real objects;
• Structural Health Monitoring in terms of static and dynamic measurements.

“Development of Service Quality for Air Transport Infrastructure”; DATIF-EUREKA project No. E!3366; 2004/07. The project was conducted by several research centres. Grant manager – professor W. Czeczuła. Project manager – professor Andrzej Seruga. The task was to develop a technology for the execution of airfield pavements from prestressed concrete.

Characteristics of the main directions of scientific and research work:

Scientific and research work carried out by the Department as part of its research, statutory activity, grants and research work for the industry covers a wide spectrum of issues related to the broadly understood civil engineering industry. First of all, these are issues in the field of structural materials and products, especially in the field of concrete and other cement materials. Besides, the team’s competencies also include technological issues, designing properties and durability of materials and its conditions. The subject of technology, properties and broadly understood durability of mineral materials are particularly developed, including mainly such materials as concrete and cement mortars, geopolymer concretes and mortars, soil- cement, structural ceramics.

The research topics undertaken by the Department ‘s employees in recent years include extensive research on the possibility of utilization of sewage sludge, which, after thermal processing, is a valuable addition to cement concretes.

In the field of cement composites, tests are carried out on: ordinary concretes and new generation concretes (high-performance and ultra-high-performance, self-compacting, lightweight aggregate concrete, fibre-reinforced concrete, self-healing concretes). These tests concern both technological aspects (composition design, evaluation of technical properties, etc.) and durability in various operating conditions – from cyclic freezing and thawing to high-temperature impact studies. Also, the team is investigating the effects of corrosion of mineral materials caused by biological agents.

The team conducts numerous research works on geopolymer composites. The problems related to the influence of their composition (selection and evaluation of the impact of the use of various aggregates, precursors and alkaline activators) on the properties of the mixture as well as the usable properties and durability of the hardened material are analyzed. Work is ongoing to use the special resistance of these binders to high temperature and to determine their resistance to chloride.

When characterizing the research activity of the Department ‘s team, it should be emphasized that in all research conducted at the Chair, great emphasis is placed on the aspects of sustainable civil engineering.

The Department’s scientific and research activity is financed both from internal funds and, to an increasing extent, from external funds as a result of European and national competitions (ERA-NET, NCN, NAWA, NCBiR, etc.). Scientific and research work is carried out in international cooperation with scientific research centres and universities. Scientific and research activities constitute a strong basis for extensive didactic activity, primarily in the field of subjects important in the education of a civil engineer, related to the broadly understood structural materials science.

In total, in 2017-2020, the employees of the Department submitted over 30 applications, including 7 related to Horizon 2020. All employees of the Chair actively participate in the implementation of research or teaching projects.

The most important scientific and research achievements in the last 10 years

Chair’s employees are invited to participate in expert works. They are members of numerous international and national technical committees and associations, including:

RILEM TC 227-HPB: Physical properties and behaviour of High-Performance Concrete at high temperature; RILEM TC 256-SPF: Spalling of concrete due to fire: testing and modelling; RILEM TC 290-IMC: Durability of Inorganic Matrix Composites used for Strengthening of Masonry Constructions; RILEM TC 283-CAM: Chloride transport in alkali-activated materials.

The Department ’s employees are the members of The Committee on Civil Engineering of the Polish Academy of Sciences (CCE PAS); Polish Committee for Standardization (PKN); Building Materials Engineering Section CCE PAS; Lesser Poland Department of the Polish Association of Civil Engineers and Technicians PZiTB; Civin Engineering Commission of the Cracow Department of Polish Academy of Science; Construction Products Council RWB at the Polish Construction Products Department of GOBC; Advisory team of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education to evaluate applications and reports under the “Implementation PhD” program; Review Team for NAWA, Horizon 2020, NCBiR programme.

Also, they cooperate, inter alia, with the Polish Cement Association; The Association of Commercial Concrete Producers in Poland; with the Management of the “Pewny Cement” Label awarded by the Board of the Polish Cement Association.

In the last decade, there has been significant development of the research and development staff of the Chair. Four of the employees have obtained the degree of habilitated doctor, and there are currently 10 doctorates, including one cotutelle in cooperation with the University of Nantes.

Thanks to the funding of the project Academic International Partnerships NAWA EMMAT which is coordinated by the Department , the cooperation of its employees with research centres and universities with a similar profile of scientific activity regarding modern construction materials that meet the requirements of sustainable development is developed. Currently, the Chair conducts joint research and employee exchange with the following research centres, including Nantes University, GeM Laboratory, Saint Nazaire, France; University of Beira Interior, Portugal; Czech Technical University in Prague, Czech Republic; Center Scientifique et Technique du Batiment, France; Universidad Católica del Uruguay, Uruguay; Dept. of Civil Engineering, National University, Taiwan; Pau et Pays d’Aldour University, France; School of Civil and Environmental Engineering, UNSW, Australia.

The participation of the Department ’s employees in the NAWA PROM project and the related international scholarship exchange of doctoral students and academic staff also ensured that young scientists would participate in summer schools, study visits, training courses and conferences. The direct effects of the international cooperation conducted are a significant increase in employee mobility, the organization of several international seminars and joint research on modern materials for sustainable civil engineering.

The result of the Department ‘s work and a significant achievement in the field of building materials engineering is the organization of a cyclical scientific and technical conference MATBUD, which in 2020 has its ninth edition. In 2016, conference papers were published in Procedia Engineering, Elsevier. During the last two editions (2018 and 2020), thanks to the large participation of foreign participants and the internationalization of the scientific committee, the conference has acquired an international character. In the Department of Bridge, Metal and Timber Structures (L3) research and development works related to design, manufacture and assessment of the technical condition of various types of structures made of steel and aluminum as well as of timber and timber-based materials are conducted. They mainly concern the verification of bearing capacity and stability of such  structures, extended to the estimation of the safety level guaranteed in persistent and  accidental design situations, after different periods of service. A large part of the research is aimed at developing the procedures for rational evaluation of the resistance, both of the members and of the complex structural systems, under the impact of simulated fire conditions with various fire development scenarios. A separate area of ​​activity of the chair employees lies in the broadly understood issues related to the transportation structures, mainly bridges and tunnels. Activities in this field include both advanced analyses of structural mechanics and also those related to the specialist design aspects and modern technological solutions.

Characteristics of the main fields of scientific and research work:

Scientific, research and implementation works – research fields: methodology of geometric design of roads and intersections; methodology for assessing the traffic impact on the environment; study on road intersections capacity; traffic safety; organization and traffic control in cities; technology of road materials and surfaces; mechanics of bituminous pavements; pavement and railways construction (including unconventional pavements); non-contact methods of measuring deformation of building materials and structures; rail track diagnostics; rail traffic management.

Research priorities: studies of the effectiveness of intersections with right-of-way and roundabouts; the speed impact and accessibility on traffic safety; accident prediction models; methods of assessing the capacity of road intersections; the use of simulation methods to test the effectiveness of traffic control at the intersections; the impact of autonomy and new technologies in traffic on the functioning and design of road infrastructure; thermo-mechanical analyzes of materials and elements of building structures; the use of geosynthetics in pavement construction; mechanics of contactless track; rail track diagnostics; unconventional use of railways; trans-European rail freight corridors.

Research activities include: initiating and implementing NCBiR grants; participation in international projects (including research projects from the European Union); initiation of research and implementation works financed by the road administration (GDDKiA), railway administration (PKP PLK SA) and local government administration; carrying out research as part of statutory activities, own research and diploma theses; participation in scientific and technical, local, national and international, conferences; organization and co-organization of scientific conferences in the fields of research.

Characteristics of the main directions of scientific and research work:

The main directions of scientific and research work carried out at the Department of Transport and Logistics Systems can be grouped into five large areas of activity:

1. logistics and shipping:

• research and modelling of goods distribution systems, including urban areas,
• development of optimization techniques and algorithms for the needs of logistics systems,
• developing integration mechanisms in supply chains,
• development and application of methods in the field of data engineering and machine learning to analyse and support decision-making processes in logistic systems,
• development of optimization techniques and algorithms for the company’s internal supply chain,
• the use of computer simulation techniques for the design, behaviour analysis of logistics systems under uncertainty conditions,
• exploring the possibility of implementing a cargo bike in cities.

2. public passenger transport (urban and regional)

• development of the methods for planning, rationalization and optimization of public transport systems,
• analysis of the effectiveness of individual measures for prioritizing public transport vehicles,
• development of modern techniques and measurement tools in public transport,
• development of methods for assessing the quality of urban and regional public transport,
• development of integration of rail transport with other subsystems, taking into account the local and regional context,
• using local public transport systems to operate tourist traffic,

3. modern forms of individual passenger transport

• analysis of the effectiveness of paid parking zones operation,
• shaping the payment for parking in the paid parking zone depending on its location,
• optimization of the location and the size of Park & Ride car parks in both urban and suburban areas, especially in the vicinity of railway stops,
• development of the carpooling system, also as a form of providing transport services in rural areas, as well as industrial areas in suburban areas,
• development of the carsharing system, including the introduction of electric rolling stock and the popularity of this system among tourists,
• personal transport devices (UTO), incl. electric scooters,

4. non-motorized traffic (including promotional activities)

• further improvement of the procedure for developing sustainable mobility plans, taking into account the Polish specificity and local conditions,
• analysis of the impact of the spatial context and the quality of infrastructure on the choice of paths in pedestrian and bicycle traffic,
• improving the method for promoting non-motorized traffic in the urban area as well as in recreational areas,
• methods for improving mutual safety in pedestrian and bicycle traffic,

5. forecasting the travel and movement of people and cargo transportation

• improving methods taking into account the passenger flows among modes of transport,
• developing a model of non-motorized traffic taking into account the impact of the quality of transport infrastructure on the volume of traffic, especially cycling,
• specificity of tourist traffic in traffic modelling in the city scale and in the regional context,
• development of the methods for forecasting freight transport in logistics networks,
• the possibility of using mobile telephony databases for the purpose of verifying the results of comprehensive traffic research,

directions for integrating the planning of the city’s and agglomeration spatial structure with the transport system.

Characteristics of the main directions of scientific and research work:

The scientific activity of the Department includes thematically specialized problem areas of the construction industry. The scientific research conducted here concerns the issues of economics, technology, organization and management in construction. The characteristics of the directions of the research are represented by the topics undertaken by researchers at the Institute, conducted in the past and recently.

In the field of scientific research, the following problems problems can be distinguished: modelling and simulation of construction processes; modelling of technology and organization of complex construction processes in random conditions; modelling of decision-making elements as a part of computer-aided management of a construction company; modelling of optimal management structures in a construction company; modelling of tender strategies of construction enterprises using the fuzzy sets theory; safety management of construction works; research on the impact of work safety conditions on the formation of time and costs of the implementation of construction processes; estimation and forecasting of own costs of a construction company using the SSN technique; systems for assessing the implementation of construction projects; management of a construction project in risk conditions; organization of construction projects in Poland; problems of modernization and development of construction companies in Poland; issues in the theory and practice of marketing activities in a construction company; organizational and economic aspects of tenders and construction contracts; property market research in Poland; property management; financing city revitalization; property pricing.

Research works conducted at the Department of Structural and Materials Mechanics concern with:

• optimization of engineering structures, taking into account geometric nonlinearity with a sensitivity analysis,
• optimal shaping (control) in systems with distributed or clustered parameters along with a sensitivity analysis,
• nanomechanics with multi-scale modelling of carbon nanostructures in the FEM formalism,
• mechanics of cellular materials,
• dynamics of engineering structures with the analysis of the mechanical properties of modern engineering structures reinforced with nanomaterials,
• environmental protection against transport and construction vibrations, including protection of historic buildings,
• research on the impact of mining tremors on buildings and people staying in them, as well as dynamic interaction due to mining tremors, the effect of quakes parameters on this phenomenon,
• models of interaction and interaction of the building with the ground,

• vibro-isolation and searching for optimal geometry and material solutions for vibro-isolating partitions,
• mechanics of anisotropic materials, propagation of elastic waves, composite materials and DIC (Digital Image Correlation) analysis,
• dynamics of engineering structures with the analysis of the mechanical properties of modern engineering structures reinforced with nanomaterials,
• research on flexible joints and their applications in structures,
• determining the dynamic response of multi-support objects to a non-uniform input,

The main directions of the department’s scientific and research work are situated in the following thematic areas: rock mass mechanics; foundations, consolidation of subsoil (soil); designing the foundations of structures on weak soils in complex geological and engineering conditions, designing the stabilization and elimination of the effects of landslides on communication routes and urbanized areas, testing anthropogenic materials and designing waste dumps, performing test loads on piles and measuring deformation of structures and building ground, assessing the impact of rheological factors and thermal and humidity changes in concrete structural and hydrotechnical massifs, problems of air-tightness and soil liquefaction effects in hydrotechnical earthwoks, construction issues in the revalorization of historic buildings, mathematical modeling of geotechnical structures, optimization issues in the mechanics of engineering structures; static and strength issues of thin-walled structures; destruction mechanics, propagation of cracks in media with microdamages; statics and dynamics of non-standard composite materials.

• Development of discretization methods (FEM, FDM, BEM, meshless methods, in particular the adaptive versions) in order to improve the reliability and effectiveness of the analysis of selected mechanics, civil engineering and related area problems;

Characteristics of the main directions of scientific and research work:

Małopolska Energy Efficient Construction Centre conducts scientific and research works in the field of modern technological solutions in respect of materials, constructions and installations for energy-efficient building.

In MCBE, scientists from Pk Krakow University of Technology conduct two types of studies– basic studies carried out in laboratory conditions and using research equipment and “in situ” (Latin “on the spot”) tests, conducted on the basis of readings from the building’s measuring system during its exploitation. The “in situ” studies, that is, studies of objects in natural conditions, are one of the most promising and developmental research methods, allowing to formulate precise conclusions about functioning of particular building elements.

The laboratory has been equipped with specialist testing equipment to test modern technologies, material, construction and installation solutions, as well as equipment to evaluate thermal comfort of people in the building and the interior microclimate.

Wind Engineering Laboratory realizes scientific-research and commercial works in four main thematic areas: Wind Engineering, Snow Engineering, Wind Energy, Applied Acoustics and Vibroacoustics.

Research works in the range of Wind Engineering:
