The Faculty of Engineering is home to the five institutes listed below with their basic research areas

Institute of Building Materials and Structures

  • Design and assessment of building materials, in particular: chemistry, modification of properties and manufacturing of building materials, assessment of their strength, durability and life-time;
  • Design and construction of concrete, steel, masonry and timber structures including bridges, underground structures or prestressed elements, reliability and safety of structures;
  • Laboratory and field testing, development of modern strengthening methods;
  • Energy-efficient and pro-ecological design of structures.

Institute of Road and Railway Engineering

  • Design, construction and diagnostics of roads and railroads, assessment of their environmental impact;
  • Paving materials, construction, maintenance and rehabilitation of road surfaces;
  • Traffic control and safety, transportation simulation, airport design, construction and maintenance.

Institute of Structural Mechanics

  • Mechanics of structures, in particular: static and dynamic analysis of industrial chimneys and foundations;
  • Earthquake, wind and soil engineering, including monitoring of vibrations and protection of buildings and people against vibrations;
  • Mechanics of thin-walled structures, development of creep and fatigue models;
  • Contact mechanics, nonlinear mechanics of porous media, structural optimization, intelligent structures, systems of optimal control, nano-mechanics.

Institute for Computational Civil Engineering

  • Computer methods (including adaptive finite element and meshless approaches) in mechanics and civil engineering, application of computer science in civil engineering;
  • Soft computing (artificial intelligence, neural networks);
  • Development of physically based approximation of experimental data, residual stress analysis, multiscale modeling.
